STSS 4460 - Body: Self, Symbol, and Politics Using cross-cultural comparisons, this course highlights the distinctive ways we conceptualize the body and explore how these assumptions influence health care in Western societies. The body is examined from three perspectives: as experienced; as a natural symbol for thinking about the relationships between nature and society; and as an artifact of social and political control.
