BIOL 4540 - Bioinformatics I The course covers concepts and methods related to information processing in biological systems. Concepts covered include homology, identity and similarity; mechanisms and measures of molecular evolution; introduction to data bases (e.g., GenBank, PDB); search algorithms (BLAST); pairwise sequence alignment using dynamic programming (GAP, BestFit); progressive methods for multiple alignment (CLUSTAL, PILEUP). Selected topics include molecular biology applications (shotgun sequencing analysis, PCR primer design).
Prerequisites/Corequisites: Prerequisites: MATH 1020, BIOL 4620, BIOL 4760.
