CSCI 6860 - Finite Element Analysis

The course focuses on the mathematical and computational fundamentals as well as the applications of classical finite element methods and discontinuous Galerkin methods.  The methods are presented through their formulations,  matrix assembly for implementation, discrete spaces and approximation theories, stability, and error estimates. They will be applied to simulate elliptic/parabolic equations, convection-diffusion equations, and kinetic transport equations in one and higher dimensions. Galerkin-projection based reduced order models may also be discussed.

Prerequisite: None, but knowledge of MATH 4200   and of MATH 4800  or CSCI 4800   is recommended, along with some experience with partial differential equations and computer programming

When Offered: SPRING TERM, EVEN YEARS

Cross Listed: MATH 6860 . Students cannot obtain credit for both this course and MATH 6860 .

Graded: GRADED

Credit Hours: 4
