This research degree is open to students with undergraduate degrees in engineering or the physical or natural sciences. In addition to the satisfactory completion of an approved set of advanced courses, candidates for this degree must complete a 5-credit thesis and 1-credit graduate seminar. The thesis must provide documentation of an independent research-related effort and be approved by the student’s faculty adviser. Listed below are recommended core courses for four possible fields of study. M.S. candidates typically take all the courses listed below in their chosen field of study.
Outcomes of the Graduate Curriculum
Students who successfully complete this program will be able to demonstrate:
- advanced proficiency in the core area of Transportation Engineering.
- proficiency in research techniques (theoretical, computational and experimental).
- effective oral and written communication skills.
- ability to disseminate original research in conference and journal papers.

Additional Requirements
M.S. students and Ph.D. students in Transportation Engineering fields are required to take CIVL 6900.
Course-work only M.E. students are not required to take CIVL 6900.
M.S. candidates in the Civil, Environmental, and Transportation Engineering disciplines are also required to take additional courses in geochemistry and/or separations processes selected in consultation with their adviser.
