The Lean Six Sigma certificate prepares engineers and scientists to lead process improvement in any industry. The program uses applied projects to build skills in the most notable methodologies for the improvement of current processes and for the creation of new lean processes for high quality results. Pertinent project management, leadership, and cultural changes skills are also gained to assure the long-term success and adoption of a lean quality mentality.
The program is taught by Rensselaer’s outstanding and highly ranked faculty. The program is built using a blended delivery methodology, bringing the best aspects of classroom and online learning together to deliver a unique project-based program – completely digitally, meaning that working professionals anywhere can participate fully in what is a personal and challenging learning experience. Not only will students learn the latest aspects of the profession, they’ll gain experience through the projects.

Certificate Information
The certificate requires three 3-credit hour courses, for a total of 9 credit hours.
- The program results in a graduate-level certificate in Lean Quality in Production.
- The certificate’s blended online delivery reflects today’s dynamic workplace.
- Courses are taken for credit, and successful completion requires a GPA of 3.0 or greater.
- Practitioner faculty guide the completion of project work as it relates to student’s career objectives.
- As each of the courses build upon prior courses, courses must be taken in sequence.
- Students may choose to complete multiple certificates or apply certificates to other degree programs, according to each program’s requirements (for eligible programs, see program Web site at ewp.rpi.edu).

Students completing this certificate are able to:
- drive meaningful improvements in existing processes by applying the principles, methods, and tools of the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) methodogy.
- use quantitative methods to identify, select, and manage projects.
- get the “eye” for identifying waste and identify the system or process to underperform.
- tie statistical thinking to real world benefits and design of experiments (DOE) using MINITAB.
- efficiently and effectively communicate the business case, findings, and realized benefits of the DMAIC methodology for process improvement in both written and oral formats.
- improve their problem-solving techniques with a proven set of tools and abilities.
- employ leadership skills to deploy and manage projects.
- use cultural change tools to drive innovation and ensure process improvements and improvement thinking, become part of work “culture”.
