Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s graduate program in Mechanical Engineering is the natural next step for engineers ready to lead teams and projects in complex organizations and environments. Experienced engineers are asked to take on larger and more complex tasks as they progress in their career. New career opportunities require broader and deeper capability sets. Rensselaer’s program gives students the breadth and depth needed no matter what the chosen career path, no matter what the organizational challenge is presented.

The program is taught by Rensselaer’s outstanding and highly-ranked engineering faculty. The program provides opportunities to learn through application, often choosing projects that help propel students forward in their careers. Students in the program are working professionals with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. They will benefit from the following:

  • a program that combines courses from the field of engineering specifically chosen to prepare professionals moving toward leadership positions within their organization.

  • a unique combination of online and blended delivery and design make the program flexible to fit into the lives of working professionals.

  • applied projects embedded throughout the program that add a practical aspect that students can contextualize to their own professional aspirations. They will work directly with an expert Faculty member to design and complete the projects.

  • successful completion of a program that results in a Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering degree.

Outcomes of the Graduate Curriculum

Students who successfully complete this program will be able to demonstrate:

  • advanced proficiency in the core program area.
  • proficiency in research techniques (theoretical, computational, and experimental).
  • effective oral and written communication skills.
  • preparedness for professional careers and/or further graduate study.

Degree Information


  • The program results in a Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering degree. 
  • Program includes coursework in project management, manufacturing, and Lean Six Sigma.
  • The program is delivered using online and blended instruction designed to fit into the lives of busy professionals.
  • Master’s Project courses are applied projects the student develops with a faculty member to demonstrate program mastery.
