Managing Technical Organizations Graduate Certificate (Hartford)

The Managing Technical Organizations certificate prepares engineers and scientists to manage teams and projects as they progress within their organizations.  The program uses applied projects to build abilities in management, strategy, budgeting and planning within the context of a technical organization in a competitive marketplace.  Students learn to evaluate problems and decisions using strategy, finance and market dynamics to augment decision making ability. Students use planning and management to lead teams and units to achieve organizational objectives.

Certificate Information


The certificate requires three 3-credit hour courses, for a total of 9 credit hours.

  • The program results in a graduate-level certificate in Managing Technical Organizations.
  • The certificate’s blended online delivery reflects today’s dynamic workplace.

  • Courses are taken for credit, and successful completion requires a GPA of 3.0 or greater.

  • Practitioner faculty guide the completion of project work as it relates to student’s career objectives.

  • As each of the courses build upon prior courses, courses must be taken in sequence.

  • Students may choose to complete multiple certificates or apply certificates to other degree programs, according to each program’s requirements (for eligible programs, see program Web site at ewp.rpi.edu).

Students completing this certificate are able to:


•    Evaluate the organization from strategic, competitive, financial and customer perspectives.
•    Manage highly effective cross-functional teams.
•    Communicate with clarity and purpose.
•    Develop and implement plans to achieve mission, vision, values and goals.
•    Prepare budgets and forecasts according to organizational plans and goals.
•    Set and evaluate relevant metrics to evaluate performance.
