Master of Science in Technology Commercialization and Entrepreneurship

This degree is designed to prepare students to create businesses or products based on their own intellectual property or facilitate the commercialization of technology enabled products, services, or businesses. Students with one of the following profiles should consider this degree: 1) Scientists and engineers who envision themselves running a laboratory, 2) Scientists and engineers who have developed intellectual property that they wish to see commercialized, 3)Those who wish to leverage their science and engineering education to facilitate new product development and new business creation, 4) Those who have studied management and wish to help commercialize technologies.

The program consists of 12 credits of required management core courses, 6 credits of law courses and 12 credits of elective science and technology related courses for which there are three tracks. The tracks are a) further development of the student’s science and engineering background; b) development of technology policy expertise; and c) development of management of innovation and technology expertise. Electives are chosen according to the selected track. The capstone course is Commercializing Advanced Technology. Law courses are taken at Albany Law School and chosen from a selected menu. Science and Technology related electives can be selected from those delivered by any of the Institute’s Schools as long as the student meets prerequisite requirements for the course. 

A two-semester Professional Development Workshop series is also required, to help students develop business communication, teamwork, leadership, and job search skills.

Outcomes of the Graduate Curriculum

Students who successfully complete this program will be able to demonstrate:

  • mastery of the conceptual, strategic, and execution dimensions of innovation, technology commercialization and entrepreneurship.
  • correct application of cutting-edge management, legal, ethical, and economic frameworks and concepts to analyzing techology commercialization and entrepreneurship opportunities. 
  • demonstrate knowledge of the behavioral, financial, and strategic drivers of technology communication and entrepreneurship. 
  • familiarity with a broad range of emerging technologies regarding commercialization, adoption, and diffusion.
  • ability to explain and address challenges associated with bringing technology related ideas from lab to market.
  • ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to describe technology enabled business opportunities.
  • knowledge of key business functions.
