Master’s Programs

The Biomedical Engineering Department offers two different routes for Master degrees: (1) The Master of Science (M.S.) is a Master’s degree that requires a thesis and (2) the Master of Engineering (M.Eng) is a coursework-only Master’s. The M.Eng. is generally recommended for students who do not plan further graduate studies. Pursuing an M.S. is advised for students who plan to obtain a higher graduate degree or have a strong interest in research. The Master’s thesis should contribute new knowledge to the field of study and is reviewed by the Master’s committee and submitted to the OGE for review.

Students pursuing a Master’s degree must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours. The minimum number of credits for coursework for an M.S. is 21 and 30 for an M.Eng. At least 3 BME classes at the 6000 level are required for the coursework and no more than two classes at the 4000 level can be included. Additionally, one course in the life sciences (biology or physiology) and one course in advanced math/statistics are required. In consultation with their adviser, students must develop a Plan of Study that satisfactorily meets Institute requirements and Departmental requirements.

Outcomes of the Graduate Curriculum
Students who successfully complete the M.Eng. in Biomedical Engineering will be able to demonstrate:

  • advanced proficiency in the core areas of Biomedical Engineering.
  •  preparedness for professional careers and/or further graduate studies.
