For the M.S. degree, students must complete at least 24 credits of course work and six credits of research work leading to an M.S. thesis.
The program must include 18 credits from the five core graduate courses Advanced Mechanical Properties (4 credits), Advanced Thermodynamics (4 credits), Advanced Electronic Properties (3 credits), Advanced Structure of Materials (4 credits), and Advanced Kinetics of Materials Reactions (3 credits). The program must also include two three-credit elective, graduate-level (6000-level) courses in the School of Engineering or the School of Science, and six M.S. thesis research credits.
Before graduating, the student is required to complete a written thesis as well as an oral presentation to the scientific community conveying important aspect of the thesis. Examples of such a presentation include an oral talk at a workshop or conference or a seminar at RPI.
