The Center for Infrastructure and Transportation Studies (CITS) provides a focal point for campus research addressing the world’s infrastructure and transportation needs. CITS also assists in coordinating all related pedagogical initiatives. About 15 faculty across the Institute participate.
The Center’s research program focuses on five themes: intelligent transportation systems (ITS), information technology, deployment and application, network analysis and control, asset management, and advanced materials. Each aspect of the life cycle for infrastructure and transportation systems is of interest—planning, analysis, design, maintenance, operation, preservation, restoration, and renewal. Common infrastructure focal points are roadways, bridges, and power distribution networks.
Projects currently under way include wireless ETTM systems, incident management systems, critical infrastruture interdependencies, investment planning for multimodal freight networks, capacity analyses for highway facilities, multilayer network modeling, and advanced concrete technologies. The pedagogical activities include course material development in the areas of intelligent transportation systems.
