Chairman: CAPT David Latta, USN
The Department of Naval Science offers an elective program to commission young men and women as officers in the United States Navy or Marine Corps upon graduation. The program includes academic courses, physical training, and leadership development. There are two categories of students: (1) scholarship and (2) College Program.
Scholarship students receive up to four years of full tuition benefits plus a monthly stipend. Typically, incoming students apply for the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship during their senior year of high school, however two- and three-year scholarships are available to current Rensselaer students who join the NROTC College Program and meet minimum standards for scholarship application.
The Rensselaer NROTC program maintains cross-town student participation partnerships with Union College and Russell Sage College.
All Rensselaer students may enroll in Naval Science courses; participation in the NROTC program is not a prerequisite.
