ARCH 4120 - Modernity and Architecture

This course is an exploration of the idea of modernity as both a cultural phenomenon extending back to Enlightenment ideas of progress, technological framing of the world, scientific rationality, and historical consciousness. The course will identify the core concepts, values, theories, and practices that contributed to the rise of modernity in the western world and eventually on a global scale. The impact of Modernity will also be critically examined historically and theoretically as an artistic and architectural discourse unfolding in the 20th century and as a radical requestioning of the traditional concepts of program, construction, and aesthetics that are central to architectural discourse.

This course is required of all second-year architecture undergraduates in the B.Arch. program.

Prerequisites/Corequisites: Prerequisite: ARCH 4100  

When Offered: Fall term annually.
